I’ve been reading and thinking a lot about the writing process this week, and after seeing Austin Kleon share this funny engineering flowchart, I was inspired to create one about the writing process.
The image I came up with is below, and while it neglects some of the…finer points of writing, it emphasizes an important thing to keep in mind when you’re in the heat of writing: research, writing, and editing should remain separate.
Particularly when writing on the computer, it’s easy to jump back and forth between sources and your document, all while editing yourself as you type. Resist the temptation! You’ll just end up wasting time and inhibiting your self-expression.
As this chart shows, it’s natural to go through each part of the process several times in creating a piece of writing (and hundreds if you’re writing a book). Just make sure to keep them separate.
How does your writing process work? Does it fit the chart above, or is different? Share your experience in the comments.
